As you may have seen reported in the News over the weekend. There has been a large attack from a type of ransomware called WannaCry (Wcry/WannaCrypt).
As always prevention is better than cure. The attack vector used was fixed by Microsoft in March of this year. This update was delivered by Microsoft via Windows Update.
The systems that CNS IT support are actively monitored. All systems we support are configured to quickly and automatically install Windows Updates and therefore should be protected.
It’s important to note that Windows 10 was not affected at all by this attack and a reminder to us all to keep up to date with technology.
All ransomware attacks rely on the fact the users may not have recent or any backups of their files at all. CNS IT monitor and maintain your current backup solution.
If the worst does occur then please contact us immediately and do not pay, it only encourages them and the data can’t always be recovered.
The single most important thing to protect your company is to ensure the reliable backup is in place. In addition to on-premise backup, the more secure option is offsite backup as it’s separated from the infected system.
The basics of the secure offsite backup solution are:
- It backs up data to an external data centre
- All the data is encrypted at source, using 256-bit encryption
- CNS work with the customer to select and create a critical data set for backup offsite
- It uses compression, deduplication, and differential data compression to only backup what’s needed in order to work across all forms of connectivity including slow ADSL connections
If you would like to speak to us about options for backup in addition to your current provision, then please contact us by the usual means.
In addition, we take this opportunity to remind all users to take extra care when working with emails from unknown senders. If in any doubt, then please don’t hesitate to contact our helpdesk.
